Today is our 33rd wedding anniversary. For those of you that may not know, we were married in Hawaii in Haiku Gardens on the windward side of Oahu. It’s a beautiful place that was very special for us. I found this picture on their website so you could see just how lovely it still is, all these years later.
So I’m sure you’re asking yourself what special wonderful things did we do today? Well we did what we do best, we wandered around some, ate lunch, had coffee, went grocery shopping again, drank Mai Tie’s on the lanai, watched the sunset, had hamburgers and hot dogs for dinner and watched some TV. It was our kind of day and we’re perfectly happy doing exactly what we wanted to.
Actually we did a little more than that but not much. We started off the day checking out a place we had decided to have our anniversary dinner at tonight. It was OK but not exactly what we were looking for.
Next we headed on up the road in Poipu to see if we could find the location of where we stayed many, many years ago when we came to Kauai with out good friends Rog and Merna. We lucked out and found the location fairly easily. What once was a little water front restaurant and bar that we hung out at (back in the day) is now a beautiful upscale restaurant and bar that is the perfect place for our anniversary dinner.
The Beach House with a gorgeous view.
This is looking on down the beach to where the house we rented used to be. We were there before Hurricane Iniki hit back in 1992. The entire coast and most of the island was devastated and the little house we stayed in was destroyed along with the original restaurant. Although we weren’t able to get a dinner reservation for tonight at sunset we have one for tomorrow night. So we really will have more than hamburgers and hot dogs to celebrate our 33 years.
Next we were off to find a food truck with rave reviews that we had read about. Unfortunately when we found it, it was all closed up. As it turns out we were happy that it didn’t work out because it forced us to find another place. As we wer e driving through Kalaheo we stumbled upon the Kauai Kookie. It was kind of a dive type place that had a great menu. We each had saimen and shared shrimp tempura. We will definitely go back before our stay on Kauai is over. And by the way……..we did buy a box of cornflake krunch kookies.
The actual touristy thing we had planned was next. A visit to Kauai Coffee Estate.
I’m not sure how many different coffees they had to sample but it was a whole bunch, way more than in the picture.
This is not a great place to bring kids but in case you do they have this sign posted.
After a few more little cups we hit the road again. As we drove along there was a sign for a lookout spot. We were in no hurry so we pulled over and looked at this wonderful view.
Pictures just doesn’t do it justice, it was truly beautiful.
Back at the condo we finally had our 1st, 2nd and maybe 3rd Mai Tai.
Sitting near the water and watching the sunset.
Here it is again just a few minutes later as a sail boat passed by.
We’re still deciding what we’ll do tomorrow but maybe visit a very old lighthouse over on the Princeville side of the island, we’ll see. Until then……………….
Enjoy,
John and Robin
