Day 6 – Maine – October 7, 2012

What better way to start the day than another visit to a Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives place.  This time we went to Maine Diner in Wells, Maine.  They are know for their lobster but they have an extensive menu and we decided to give it a go for breakfast.  By the time we got there there was a line out the door but we persevered and ended up having a wonder breakfast.

Day 6 001

After breakfast we headed on into Wells and followed our nose to find the beach and ocean.  The beach we found was amazing.  It was low tide so the beach was massive and the sea very calm.  Their were a lot of people walking on the beach with their dogs or simply sitting in a chair enjoying the sun.  The sand was nothing like what we have at home.  Here it was very hard packed, barely leaving foot prints.

Day 6 002 Day 6 004

On the way back to the Inn, we make our first (but not last) stop at Dunkin Donuts, one of our favorites on the east coast.

Day 6 008

We visited a quilt shop here in Kennebunk but it’s hardly worth mentioning.  John says I have at least twice as much in my sewing room as they have (little does he know).  It wasn’t even worth taking a picture but we did get to see just the beginning of some fall color.

Day 6 009 Day 6 010

After our disappointed stop, we decided to head to Kennebunkport.  It has a very busy touristy downtown and as we drove through we missed the public parking so we decided to just keep driving for a while and then turn around and head back.  As we drove, we were wondering where the Bush compound was.  All of a sudden there are a bunch of cars pulled over and, guess what?  There it was right in front of us.

Day 6 019

All I can say is WOW!  What a beautiful home with an unbelievable view.  Since they didn’t appear to be home and nobody was inviting us in, we decided to head back to town, walk around and have a late afternoon cocktail.

This is the remains of John’s drink which was called “The Presidential Manhattan”.  He said it was made exactly the way he makes them at home.

Day 6 023

As we were leaving I snapped this picture of a couple of guys out on the water kayaking.  Are they nuts?  It was way too cold to be out on the water in a little kayak.

Day 6 022

Tomorrow we’re heading into Portland and hopefully visit some lighthouses.  Until then…….

Hugs,

John and Robin

p.s.  For dinner we headed back to the Maine Inn and this time we had a lobster pie, YUM!
