First let me just say we are tired. We’ve walked, walked and walked some more. Tonight I think we’re going to take it easy, pack and get ready for the Amtrak ride to Philadelphia tomorrow. But before we do that here’s some pictures from today.
We started out taking the Metro (subway) to our first museum of the day, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
The Metro is very clean and safe, apparently is just like BART in San Francisco. This is a shot looking down the tracks.
Here’s John standing next to the Apollo 11 Command Module.
Next the Charles Lindberg, Spirit of St. Louis.
This is a DC-3 which my Dad flew way back a gazillion years ago, not this one but one just like it. Very fond memories for me.
This is a photograph taken about a year ago of Alan Bean, the 4th man to walk on the moon. He is a wonderful artist and the museum had a special exhibit of of work. Here’s just a sample.
The pictures just don’t do justice to his artwork. It was wonderful.
Next we walked across the National Mall to the National Gallery of Art which isn’t part of the Smithsonian Museums. John wanted to see some “real” art. Well he got his wish. We saw a Da Vinci painting up close.
Once he saw this we were ready to move on to the National Museum of Natural History. Here’s a little of what we saw.
A giant Whale,
A giant squid,
A giant elephant,
A giant dinosaur,
A giant sea turtle,
And…a giant diamond, “The Hope Diamond”,
And of course you need a giant setting for the diamond.
We’ve had a wonderful time in D.C. but it’s time to move on.
